Every night for three weeks in July, I’m lulled to sleep by the voices of Paul Sherwin, Mike Tomalaris and “Mr Cycling”, Phil Liggett. As I’ve described in a previous post, the evening begins with the SBS tour coverage theme.
The three weeks have drawn to an end. It’s now late on Sunday night and I’m watching the peleton riding into the outskirts of Paris with 82km to go. 12 months ago, I stood on the entrance to the tunnel that goes under the jardin des tuileries. It was an awesome experience that gave me the sounds and vibe of le tour at full throttle as the peleton hurtled around the 8 laps of the champs eleysees.
Whilst the experience was unforgettable, it was the worst year I’ve had for watching the tour. We had no idea what happened. Prior to being in Paris, I was travelling through europe and never got more than a news highlight about the the tour. Here in Australia, we are treated to a feast of cycling for three weeks. Whilst I can’t speak for my fellow cyclists, I want to extend a huge thank you to the SBS team for a stunning three weeks
viva le tour !
